Windows Registry – A Brief Intro

Windows Registry – A Brief Intro

In General Windows Registry is a member or a part of an Operating System that records the relationship between the software, Hardware, Users, Memory Space and other System preferences. It is also referred as a Database in which the settings and options for the ( Windows ) Operating System are Stored.

For Example: It logs or records all the Software’s Installed and Hardware’s Configured and so on.

It is like an Attendance book, which contains the information about number of present and number of absent files and settings in the Windows Operating System.

As the Registry Stores every details regarding the Hardwares, Softwares, users and other system preferences, it is important to back-up the registry before we touch it. After taking back-up of the registry you can do any modifications and play any tweaks with it, after playing theses tweaks you have to reboot your system, then only the tweak you played comes to effect, but sometimes this may result in corruption of the system file or the OS file, so When you back-up this you can use he back-up registry to restore the default one.
Registry data is contained in two files namely,

1. User.dat
2. System.dat

The above mentioned two files are stored in the ‘Windows’ folder. Considering the importance of the registry, they are automatically backed up.
The Windows 95 takes back-up of the registry every time it boots successfully and stores it in “System.dao” and “User.dao“.

Windows 98 takes nearly 5 backups of the registry and stores it in “system.ini” and “win.ini” files and stores these files in a folder called “sysbckup” and these are usually called “rb00.can
When you Install the Windows 95 or 98 for the first time, then it keeps the copy of the registry in “System.1st” file.

NOTE: The Registry Tweaks given here were all tested, and I kindly recommend you to Back-up your registry, Incase of any corruption in your system file or the Operating system file the Admin of this website is not responsible for your activity.

Only few registry tweaks are given here for playing pranks, there were many ohter registry tweaks with which you can control and modify the Operating System. The few of them are…..

1. Go to run and type regedit.
2. A window as shown below appears.

Regedit

There you can see, five sub directories under my computer and these sub-directorie are called as Hives, which contains all the information’s about the softwares installed and hardwares cofigured and so on.

HIVES

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
This hive contains all the inforamations about the windows user interfaces, shortcuts and OLE ( Object Linking and Embedding ) inormations.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
This Hive contains the information’s regarding the currently logged on user, including his/her Desktop settings, logon details such as his/her username and account type.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
This Hive contains all the informations regarding the computer, such as the hardwares configured and softwares installed, which are common to all the users.

HKEY_USERS
This Hive contains all the informations about some specific preferences of individual users. Each user has allotedan unique ID called Security Identifier, incase a user named cybercrawler was already created and its SID security Identifier is something like 121212 and when the user is removed, then the SID will also be freed up, so again the user with the same name ( cybercrawler ) is created the SID will differ and will not be the same as the previous one. So this logs all the user information along with their SID(Security Identifier).

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
This Hive contains all the details of the machine right from the booting and associated it with the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. So, it gathers all the details right from the booting everytime and associates with the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Hive.
