Wired Keyboards – Vulnerable to Electromagnetic Emanations

Key logging is one of the prime technique that is still been used by lot of hackers all around the world to steal credentials and lot more sensitive data, but here comes an advanced technique of remote key stroke observing by taking advantage over the electromagnetic emanation that’s been emitted by the wired keyboards.

Keystroke Emanation

Wired keyboards emits electromagnetic waves since they contain electronic components and this radiation reveals the keystrokes.

Martin Vuagnoux and Sylvain Pasini experimented and found that the wired Keyboard can reveal keystrokes at a distance up to 20 meters, even through walls and they have tested 11 different wired keyboard models bought between 2001 and 2008 (PS/2, USB and laptop) and they are all vulnerable to at least one of our 4 attacks.

Here is a Video Demonstrating how it works….

They have included in their official site that “No doubt that our attacks can be significantly improved” and the paper is currently in the review process and soon will be published in a conference.
